13/2/11 We went all the way to Ebbisham Farm to try and qualify for the Dengie Dressage. It was a very eventful day in many ways.
To start with Woody, who we were taking for Daisy (One of my pupils) to compete, kept falling over while travelling, so we had to take him home after getting 20 minutes into the journey. This then meant that Daisy didn’t have a horse to ride, so I said she could my horse Brook. Daisy had only ever ridden her twice at home before, just a little trot round the arena a few times, so she was a bit apprehensive about it. As the journey went on we were both thinking more and more about whether she should do it on her or not. Taking into account how awkward Brook is every time I ride her and only a few days prior to the show Daisy had seen me riding Brook at home galloping round the arena bucking and rearing, so that was quite a put off! But as always Daisy decided she would give it a go. After Norton Heath last weekend Shelley said I could take Murph where I want, when I want. So we decided to take him to the dressage, but he had only ever done one dressage test before hand, and being a show jumper all his life, we didn’t expect miracles. Daisy scored 58% in the Novice Dengie Qualifier with Hambrooke’s 1st lady I was 3rd & qualified in the Novice Dengie Qualifier with Craugh’s Choreographer 1st & Qualified in the Open Dengie Qualifier with Craugh’s Choreographer & 3rd & Qualified in the Open Dengie Qualifier with Hambrooke’s 1st lady My first part of training towards being a course builder went very well at the BSJA show @ Norton Heath, although it was a very early morning! We aimed to get home around 2.30 so I could ride, but I ended up riding a friend’s horse, which I was very unprepared for! All I had was jeans & a jumper, & luckily a pair of riding boots in the car! No hat, jacket or shirt, but Shelley who owns the horse let me use her hat & jacket which luckily fitted.
I got all my gear on and went and met the horse (who id never even seen before, let alone ridden), then popped a few fences in the warm up & got to know him a bit. I jumped the last class which was a very big 1m open & 1.10 in the jump off! But Murphy- Craugh’s Choreographer was very well behaved and just had one down in the jump off, but a very fast time which probably would have put me in the top 2 if it wasn’t for the pole! But considering we didn’t know each other at all, I thought it went really well. Everyone did really really well!
Molly & Alfy were highest placed of my pupils in the walk & trot & also qualified for the dressage championships, which is excelent considering it was Molly's first ever show and had never ridden Alfy before. Daisy and Alfy were 2nd in the prelim, also qualifying for the championships which was very good! Kayleigh did a lovely test also on alfy, again her first ever time riding him, so very well done! Jack & Lilly did a lovely test in the walk and trot! His first ever dressage test and only third or fourth show! Kacey & Tom also in walk and trot did really well at her first ever competion. Jaqline rode a brilliant test, also at her first ever show, although Woody didnt co-operate as well as he could have, but Jaqline handled it very, very well! Hannah, also her first show did very well in the walk and trot, with Woody! Zuzka & Woody did a very speedy dressage test, but did really well for Zuzka's first ever show! Sofia and Tommy did a lovely test, although Sof did choose to do the prelim which was much harder because it involved canter, at her first ever dressage show! She does like a challenge! But pulled it of very well! I rode Lilly in the Walk & Trot & came 4th, which was very good as it was her first ever dressage test! I also did the prelim on her, which was very fast, but she was very well behaved for a y Well Done Everybody! I know have a hunt horse! Ha-ha! We took Alfy hunting for his first ever time! It was rather exciting for him! We spent the first 20 minutes cantering past everybody, that was walking or trotting, and walk or trot, just wasn’t known! He did settle down and stand still for a few minutes but as soon as somebody moved, even a hound going past he was off again! He really enjoyed it, So much so that he is still trotting round his field with excitement, hoping a hound will come out of the trees and play with him! Any noise, sounding like a hound, or hunting horn now sets him off!
We arrived late and missed the class I wanted to do on Olly as a warm up before the Dengie! So we weren’t having much luck! I went in thinking we weren’t going to do brilliantly, and came out 3rd and qualified! So it didn’t turn out to be so bad after all! Finally all three horses have qualified for the Dengie SJ and are now waiting for the 2nd rounds in March!
Brook was far too confident and cocky, jumping very bold, fast and controlling round the 1.05m! So we hired the arena out at the end and she jumped round perfect, no kicks or pulls needed! Alfy didn’t have much concentration as usual jumping round the 1.05m, and stopped too look at brook, coming into a fence! So he did get a few smacks, but then jumped lovely and came 3rd! Olly was very sprightly and just as I turned and got straight to enter down the centre line; he exploded, and thought it needed to be done at a leaping, bucking canter! Luckily I managed to turn him away before entering through the boards! After the explosion, he then proceeded to do a lovely test & was 4th, qualifying for the Novice Dengie Area Championships!
Brook had a few bucks here and there in the warm up! But then was a very good girl when she went in, although a bit spooky, and lacking concentration, managed to come 8th in the Intermediate! Olly had switched off by the time it came to him in the Intermediate, so added a few extras to the test to make it a bit more interesting! Spooks, halts, bucks & a canter here and there, when he felt like it! But he came 10th! Overall a good day out, but a bit to work on with Olly before the next round of the Dengie! |
